VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – What could cool down our white-hot market?

The Fraser Institute — Vancouver-based think-tank — suggests getting rid of red tape as a solution to the problem of housing affordability.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as experts always pushing for fewer regulations.

They say municipalities are the problem for forcing developers to work under things like onerous zoning restrictions that prevent them from building more homes that could go on the market and, in theory, lead to a drop in prices.

Authors of the study looked at five factors they claim continue to slow down supply of new housing in cities like Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, including how long it takes projects to be approved, and the costs and fees involved in development.
